Undergraduate research assistant needed: Work in the Sierra Nevada Mountains this summer studying plant ecology!

Graduate student is seeking a field assistant for a project studying the effects of prescribed fire on two rare orchids in the Sierra Nevada. Assistant will conduct vegetation surveys, collect environmental data, and set up permanent monitoring plots. The position will begin June 15th, 2007, and will last for three months.
Applicants must be an undergraduate from UC Davis.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

• Collect data on vegetation composition and cover.

• Use GPS equipment to map and locate orchid populations.

• Identify vascular plants to the species and subspecies level.

• Measure light quality using a LI-COR canopy analyzer.

• Collect and processes soil samples to measure soil moisture and quality.

• Collect and process tree rings using an increment borer and standard dendrochronological techniques.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates must be an undergraduate at UC Davis and have completed some advanced coursework in plant taxonomy, botany, plant ecology, field ecology, natural sciences, or related courses. Candidate should have some experience using standard protocols for measuring, recording, and managing data in support of research in natural sciences. Candidates should also be in excellent physical condition,
capable of long hikes in rugged terrain while carrying a backpack weighing up to 50 pounds.

Skills in the following areas are valuable: identification of Sierra Nevada flora; familiarity using field equipment including: radio, GPS unit, and canopy analyzer; ability to operate off-road vehicles; wilderness safety capabilities; ability to navigate rough terrain using map and compass; working well in a team setting. An interest in fire ecology is also desirable. At times working conditions will be physically and mentally demanding so a positive attitude and a willingness to work under challenging conditions is a must.

The position will last for the summer months (June-August) and will often require extended periods spent working and camping at different field-sites throughout California. Transportation between study sites and the Sacramento/Davis area will be provided.

The position will offer opportunities to gain valuable skills and experience working as a botanist/plant ecologist. This position will be especially beneficial for students looking for a chance to enhance their plant identification skills.

WAGES: $13.50 per hour
