Professional Biography

Dr. Viers is Associate Director of the Center for Watershed Sciences, and an Associate Research Ecologist in the Department of Environmental Science and Policy. His research interests and projects investigate the geospatial aspects of watershed science with a specific focus on the watersheds of the North Coast and the Sierra Nevada. His watershed research activities include aspects of natural flow regimes, climate change, water management, land use, sustainable viticulture, freshwater ecosystem conservation, and riparian restoration. In addition to directing the GIS activities of the Center for Watershed Sciences and their Sierra Strategies research team, his research also includes the development of new tools for spatial analysis, the application of new technologies, such as LiDAR and hyperspectral remote sensing, and the leveraging of data at ICE. He is also the lead Principal Investigator for the Cosumnes Research Group III, an interdisciplinary team focused on process-based river restoration, and co-Principal Investigator for SBX2 1 Nitrate Project for Salinas Valley and Tulare Lake Groundwater Basins.
